He is a Senior Supervising Engineer with a high level of expertise in the design and analysis of suspension bridges. He has a solid fundamental understanding of structures and can apply his knowledge exceptionally well to the design and analysis of highly complex structures. He is also a strong communicator, able to identify and distill the key information that is relevant to the task at hand and present it in a clear and quickly understandable manner.
What is Convergence? What is Convergence Study? It is easy to obtain the result from bridge finite element analysis, but to get more accurate results requires extra effort.
Why is a cable-stayed bridge difficult to analyze? Cable-stayed bridges, including so-called Extradosed bridges, do not have any classical solutions. The computer-based displacement method is the only way to analyze cable-stayed bridges and it is hard to check the output.

He is a very talented engineer with years of professional experience. He has more than 25 years of professional and teaching experience in geotechnical earthquake engineering, bridge engineering, and construction engineering. He has performed technical oversight and review of the geotechnical and earthquake engineering activities for the seismic retrofit of all toll bridges and road tunnels in California. He has been responsible for developing the seismic design criteria for Caltrans bridge abutments and tunnel structures. He has developed state-of-the-art computer software for seismic analysis and design of earth retaining systems, including implementing the AASHTO LRFD recommendations for retaining structures and bridge abutments. He has developed Section 5 of the Caltrans' Bridge DesignPractice manual “Lateral Earth Pressure and Retaining Structures.”
He has a passion for engineering, and he has worked on so many prestigious projects. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering in Utah and a doctorate from the University of Southern California. He landed a job at the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in 1987, where he provided technical oversight on seismic retrofitting of toll bridges and tunnel structures. He moved up quickly and helped write numerous manuals on trenching and shoring for excavating. He had a hand in Caltrans’s latest Seismic Design Criteria, which came out last November. The manuals are used worldwide for highway and rail construction and retrofitting.
Many countries, including Japan, Turkey, India, Guatemala, and Russia, have paid them to train their engineers about designing earthquake-resistant structures. He has been a lecturer at the University of California, Irvine. He regularly appears before the Caltrans' Seismic Advisory Board, an independent panel that scrutinizes policies, rules, and plans for construction in earthquake-prone California.

He is a Senior Structural Engineer in the Jacobs. He is involved in preliminary and final bridge design in both steel and concrete. He has been active in several bridge design projects, including segmental concrete structures, steel box girders, and long-span cable-stayed bridges. His technical expertise includes structural analysis and design with an emphasis on computer modeling and diverse computer applications. He is also experienced in time-dependent and linear and non-linear finite element analysis. Typical projects are described below.
He was a staff structural engineer for the design on the MIC – Earlington HeightConnector segmental portion, featuring 13 units with a total length of 1.1 miles of constant and variable depth and width precast box girders in Miami, Florida; ten post-tensioned concrete box girder segmental bridges on the SR 826/SR836Interchange in Miami, Florida; and for the eight segmental bridges on the Big-I Interchange in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The design of these bridges was done, taking into consideration the balance cantilever method of construction. Also, he was involved in the final design of both the steel and concrete alternate for the extradosed stayed-cable bridge on the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge in New Haven, Connecticut (I-95 crossing the Quinnipiac River with an estimated cost of$100million).
Demonstrating redundancy for a dual steel box girder system involves in-depth structural analysis and may require enhancements to certain structural details. The benefit is that structures if proven redundant, can be maintained as non-fracture critical.
The presentation is on the “Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge (Q-Bridge) – Transverse Design Review and Load Rating”. The Q-Bridge is the first “extradosed” cable-stayed bridge built in the USA. First, the presentation will provide an overview of the project characteristics of the extradosed cable-stayed bridge.
He is a structural engineer at GM2 Associates, Inc (Hartford, CT) with experience in design, modeling, and analysis of various types of bridges, including steel, arch, prestressed concrete, NEXT beams, box culvert, and pipe arch. He also has practical experience in bridge design and load rating, preparation of contract plans, bridge rehabilitation study reports, bridge demolition and erection analysis, design services during construction, among other aspects of bridge engineering. Proficient in various structural analysis software, including MIDAS/civil, AASHTOWare BrR, and CANDE.
This presentation focused on the load rating of a 17 span steel composite girder bridge which carries I-95 over Metro North Railroad and local roads in Stamford, CT.
Setting up links for bridge structure analysis is a very important step, yet often times it is implemented without too much consideration to its implication to the overall structural behavior.
He has more than 15 years of experience in bridge design. Since 2013, he joined V-con as an executive director and senior bridge engineer. V-CON is a member of the VALBEK group and designing and consulting engineering office specialized in Steel and concrete bridges Bridge building technologies, Steel structures – detailed design.
Steel composite footbridge Morava project is presented in this session. The structure is described with interesting remarks from the assembly. Practical experience on how to design footbridges that are sensitive to the load imposed by pedestrians is shared.

Generally, we have aging structures for more than 50~100 years. And these structure has more increased loading along with the development. There are a few cases of bridge collapse due to overloading. Therefore, we need to manage the structures from the perspective of asset management efficiency. So, Load Rating is necessary.
