Bridge Insight : New Development in Long Span Arch Bridges
This session will describe all the steps of the assessment process of the existing iconic steel bridge in Scotland, Connel Bridge, with midas Civil. Connel Bridge, a typical cantilever steel bridge, is a riveted steel structure 224m long which comprises 77m cantilever sections supporting a 70m suspended span.
The client requested that Jacobs carry out an assessment of the structural capacity of the bridge to British Standards. The speaker will explain the knowledge of available record information and inspection for assessment during the session.
Introduction and Project Overview
Assessment Process of Connel Bridge
- Knowledge of available record information
- inspection for assessment
- Analysis and capacity check in midas Civil program

Key point 1: Why are bridge assessments needed?
Assessment of the bridge refers to evaluating the various functions of the existing bridge to judge the practicality and safety of the bridge. Purposes of assessment of bridge are analyzing a structural defect, evaluating the safety and practicality of old bridges, maximizing economic use by extending the life of the existing bridge, and providing necessary data for maintenance of existing bridges
Key point 2: Assessment process
We want to learn about the precise assessment process carried in UK, and the speaker will introduce all the steps of assessment process for the existing bridges and explain the useful functions of midas Civil which were applied in this project.
Key point 3: Modelling Consideration
During the modeling of the Connel Bridge in midas Civil, a speaker will show the step-by-step modeling process of a typical steel bridge using various modeling functions of midas Civil.
